The story is based on a real duck that lived in the harbour at Brixham, a small seaside town on the coast of Devon, England.
The bird proved to be quite a character, mysteriously appearing and disapperaing in and around the boats, where he was spotted by countless visitors and locals.
In the book, Sam , a young visitor to the town spots the Brixham Drake and sets out to find out where the Drake has come from and why he had chosen a life at sea. However in this tale it is the the bird that reveals all, telling his side of the story and the life he has led, as he befriends the boy.
